Abstract
Taiwan Ocean Prediction System (TOPS), the high-resolution wave and ocean numerical models are operated by Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI). In order to reduce computational time and increase the grid resolution, the one-way nested grids are adopted for Northwestern Pacific Ocean and the sea around Taiwan. The WAVEWACTCH-III models and the multi-scales Princeton Ocean Model (POM) are respectively used for the predictions of the wind wave and the three-dimensional ocean current. The variables of operational atmosphere forecast model (NCEP/GFS) are used as boundary conditions for TOPS which produces 168 hours forecasts on ocean waves, tides and currents in the future. Predictions are regularly published on the website and also used in many value-added applications such as maritime drift trajectory simulation, marine comprehensive exploitation, hazard mitigation and so on.
