Abstract

The presented time-series data synthesis pilot product includes data from 12 fixed ship-based time-series programs. The related stations represent unique marine environments within the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Nordic Seas, and Caribbean Sea. The focus of the pilot has been placed on biogeochemical essential ocean variables: dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic nutrients, inorganic carbon (pH, total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, and partial pressure of CO2), particulate matter, and dissolved organic carbon. The time-series used include a variety of temporal resolutions (monthly, seasonal, or irregular), time ranges (10 to 36 years), and bottom depths (80 to 6000 meters), with the oldest samples dating back to 1983 and the most recent one corresponding to 2021. Besides having been harmonized into the same format (semantics, ancillary data, units), the data were subjected to a qualitative assessment in which the applied methods were evaluated and categorized. Additional data-quality descriptors include precision and accuracy estimates. This data product pilot facilitates a variety of applications that benefit from the collective value of biogeochemical time-series observations and forms the basis for a sustained time-series living data product, complementing relevant products for the global interior ocean carbon data (GLobal Ocean Data Analysis Project), global surface ocean carbon data (Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas; SOCAT), and global interior and surface methane and nitrous oxide data (MarinE MethanE and NiTrous Oxide product).

The African Marine Atlas developed by the Ocean Data and Information Network for Africa (ODINAFRICA) was officially launched on 23 February 2007 at the IOC Project Office for International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) in Ostend, Belgium. The African Marine Atlas, which can be accessed at http://www.africanmarineatlas.net, provides substantial maps, images, data and information to coastal resource managers, planners and decision-makers from various administrative institutions and specialized agencies in Africa. The Atlas will be of immense benefit to national institutions and a variety of users such as environmentalists, local administrators, park managers, scientific community, fishing cooperatives, tourists, hotel keepers, teachers, NGOs, the general public, and any other interested persons. It has over 800 downloadable data products africanmarineatlas_map.jpgderived from the fields of marine geo-sphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, geopolitical and the human socio-economic dimensions. The Atlas indicates areas of intense use along the coastline requiring careful management and provides potential foresight on likely consequences of specific decisions. Further, the Atlas indicates gaps in knowledge and information base, where additional efforts may be directed. The Atlas will also act in other ways as a guide to recreational opportunities and tourist attractions. In developing the Atlas, the main objective was to collate available geospatial datasets and information on the marine environment and to summarize it into an African Marine Atlas suite. The website is one of a set of Marine Atlas products that will include web data services, web mapping and an Atlas publication when completed. The Atlas was realized through intensive work between May 2006 and February 2007 by a team of 16 marine scientists and GIS experts from NODC’s in Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, and Tanzania. International ocean data experts provided key inputs in data analysis. It is based on an extensive survey of coastal and marine data needs undertaken in early 2006 in all the countries participating in ODINAFRICA. Primary partners in this project were the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the African Coelecanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP). UNEP will develop a clearinghouse and information system on coastal and marine resources of Eastern Africa from the regional atlas. The Atlas has brought great benefits to participating national institutions and Africa as a whole, by encouraging scientists to work together, learn new techniques, and build teams that will continue to regularly update the Atlas with national and local scale data sets. In 2018 with assistance from the International Coastal Atlas Network (ICAN), the AMA project transitioned to the GeoNode Platform and became known as the African Coastal and Marine Atlas (ACMA).

The Rolling Deck to Repository

Abstract

The Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program manages underway environmental sensor data from scientific expeditions for the U.S. academic research fleet. R2R maintains a comprehensive catalog of modern academic fleet expeditions with inventories of end-of-cruise data distributions from each vessel operator, and provides access to the routinely collected environmental data obtained from ship-board sensors for each expedition. These data are submitted to the NOAA Data Centers for long-term preservation and data quality assessments are provided for the most common data streams. R2R creates a number of value-added products including quality-controlled shiptrack navigation, geophysical profiles (gravity, magnetics, bathymetry), CTD data and real-time meteorology/near-surface oceanography in partnership with the SAMOS program. Data from each cruise are submitted directly to R2R by vessel operators, rather than from science parties. Abstract

We aim to achieve increased comparability between Biomolecular Ocean Practices (BOPs). Currently, the wealth of ocean biomolecular practices is shared in diverse formats (e.g. text in publications, pdfs, ...). To better compare differences in practices and integrate data generated using BOPs, we developed markdown templates as well as standardized metadata describing protocols (called Minimum Information about an Omics Protocol or "MIOP"). Our goal is to create machine-readable protocol documents where changes can be tracked, assigned DOIs, and linked to associated datasets. These tools will also allow us to compare protocols at scale and make protocols more findable.

PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited or PTTEP conducts business in petroleum exploration, development, and production to support Thailand's energy security and the energy demand of countries we operate in. PTTEP believes that the power of collaboration can drive business, society and the environment towards sustainability. Additionally, the Company collaborates with other partners to strive to create benefits for society and the environment on a large scale, in carrying out social projects under the Ocean for Life strategy, of 3 workstreams: 1) Sustainable Ocean-Friendly Operations 2) Sustainable Ocean Health and Blue Carbon Solutions and 3) Sustainable Community around the Ocean. In this regard, the Company has established the PTTEP Ocean Data Platform, which has been initiated since 2021 to support the Company's aspiration to become the guardian of marine conservation. Our duty is to safeguard, preserve, and protect the ocean, which is like a second home. Since our operating areas are mostly offshore, PTTEP is committed to taking part in disclosing marine science data around the offshore operation covering both in Thailand and abroad through collaboration with various sectors; such as governmental agencies, leading universities, and sustainability-focused independent organizations. The disclosure of such data to the public aims to encourage the innovative utilization on a broader scale. This is particularly relevant as currently; there is limited availability of offshore marine scientific data of Thailand.
