Wildcards '?' (single character) and '*' (multiple characters) are accepted.

Abstract

During each O&M cruise, CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) casts are performed prior to deployment and following recovery of most OOI assets. Glider deployments may involve a single reference CTD cast. Water samples are collected in Niskin bottles at multiple depths, and analyzed for oxygen (Winkler), chlorophyll-a fluorescence and pigment distribution, nitrate/nitrite, and potentially a full nutrient suite, total DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) and total alkalinity, pH, and salinity.

Abstract

OOI’s data portal contains data from each of OOI’s seven arrays (including the suspended Southern Ocean and Argentine Basin Arrays), 80 platforms, and 800 instruments, measuring 200 different ocean parameters. Designed as a one-stop shop to get users the data they need, the portal is a key resource to answer important science questions about the changing ocean Users can access real-time data from the Regional Cabled Array. From the Coastal and Global Arrays, users can access both telemetered (real-time data from deployed instruments) and recovered data, which is downloaded once instruments have been recovered, via the portal. You can explore OOI data and create customized searches by location, time, and ocean parameters measured. Users can also avail themselves of portal features such as generating plots and visualizing data for easy incorporation of data results into research papers and classroom activities.

Abstract

The ERDDAP (National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Research Division’s Data Access Program) Server is a free and open-source Java “servlet” that converts and serves a variety of scientific datasets using common file formats. The OOI ERDDAP server provides a simple, consistent way to access and download uncabled, telemetered data from OOI moorings and gliders. Datasets can be downloaded in common file formats, such as Python, R, Javascript, and MATLAB, with the capability of creating graphs and maps. OOI’s ERDDAP server has ~600 datasets listed in alphabetical order by source (OOI array). Datasets can be searched using full text, by metadata category or protocol, with an additional option of advanced search. All OOI ERDDAP datasets have been uploaded on OOI’s Data Explorer so users can access ERDDAP data there then use this amazing tool to compare, combine, and visualize datasets.

Abstract

Every 3-hours from 250 miles off the Oregon coast, and 1 mile underwater, HD video streams in live over the Internet through the OOI’s Cabled Array in situ camera system. Live video streams of an actively venting hydrothermal chimney occur during the hours of 2:00, 5:00, 8:00, and 11:00 EDT & PDT day and night, for a duration of 14 minutes. In addition, as of November 2016, the camera now records for 24 hours non-stop on the 10th and 20th of every month, and 72 hours non-stop from the 1st to 3rd of every month, to examine animal behavior, diurnal/tidal cycles, and longer-duration changes in hydrothermal flow.

The Core Instrument Analytical Results data repository contains processed analytical data and metadata for a subset of Cabled Array instruments that collect fluid or particulate samples that are brought back to shore and analyzed in a laboratory. These instruments are described briefly below, along with links to their respective data files. Numerical and other processed analytical results are generally provided in spreadsheet form. Associated metadata files including analytical protocols, sampling and recovery notes, and sample log files are presented in .pdf format. As-deployed images of instruments are provided in .jpg format, with image metadata summarized in spreadsheet-based catalogs. Osmosis-based Water Sampler (OSMOI) Data – This instrument class provides a long-term sampling of diffuse and/or pore fluids at the seabed by drawing those fluids into small-bore, capillary tubing. The instrument currently deployed at Southern Hydrate Ridge samples pore fluids associated with methane seeps, while the instrument at the ASHES vent field on Axial Seamount is collocated with the 3-D Temperature Array (TMPSF) and samples diffuse fluids associated with the hydrothermal flow. After instrument recovery, laboratory analyses provide major/trace element chemistry of these fluid samples. Hydrothermal Vent Fluid Interactive Sampler (RASFL) Data – This instrument collects fluid samples from hydrothermal vents at the International District Vent Field on Axial Seamount. It is collocated with the Particulate DNA Sampler (PPSDN; see below) and has an onboard temperature sensor (D1000) which continuously measures vent fluid temperatures. The sampler is able to be interactive, as its connection to the fiber optic cable allows two-way communication and power. Sample bottles can be triggered from shore in response to volcanic or tectonic events or set to trigger at specified intervals. After instrument recovery, laboratory analyses provide a chemical characterization of the hydrothermal fluid samples. Particulate DNA Sampler (PPSDN) Data – This instrument filters and preserves the particulate matter associated with venting hydrothermal fluids at the International District Vent Field on Axial Seamount. The instrument is collocated with the Hydrothermal Vent Fluid Interactive Sampler (RASFL; see above) and can be similarly controlled remotely in response to volcanic or tectonic events. Upon recovery, genetic analysis of the particulates provides information on the microbial communities associated with hydrothermal vents. Benthic Fluid Flow (FLOBN-C) Data – This instrument measures fluid flow at the sediment-water interface by monitoring the dilution of a chemical tracer injected into fluids at the seabed and collected in small-bore, capillary tubing by osmotic pumps. The “C” series of this instrument is a Chemical and Aqueous Transport (CAT) meter, and is deployed on or near methane seeps at the Southern Hydrate Ridge seabed. The recovered fluids are analyzed for chemical tracer and major ion concentrations, and flow rates are calculated. Benthic Fluid Flow (FLOBN-M) Data – This instrument measures fluid flow at the sediment-water interface by monitoring the dilution of a chemical tracer injected into pore fluids below the seabed and collected in small-bore, capillary tubing by osmotic pumps. The “M” series of this instrument is a Multiple Orifice Sampler and Quantitative Injection Tracer Observer (MOSQUITO), and is deployed on or near methane seeps at the Southern Hydrate Ridge seabed. The recovered fluids are analyzed for chemical tracer and major ion concentrations, and flow rates are calculated.

Abstract

The OOI Machine-to-Machine (M2M) interface provides access to OOI data via a RESTful Application Programming Interface (API). A RESTful API allows two software programs to communicate with each other. For OOI, this interface allows authenticated users to request small amounts of data via synchronous JSON requests, request larger amounts of data in NetCDF or CSV format to download multiple data streams or data from multiple platforms, or set up recurring downloads to update an existing dataset. Additionally, searches of the asset management system can be executed to find deployment, calibration, quality control parameters, annotations, and other information, both in bulk and for specific instruments or platforms.

Abstract

The OOI strives to make data accessible and usable so scientists can easily apply it to their research questions and teachers can integrate it into their classroom instructions. Two ways in which we do this is to use popular programming languages like Python and tools like Jupyter Notebooks, both of which are widely used in the research community. Python excels at scalability, making it possible for scientists to approach problems in many different ways. Jupyter Notebooks, an open-source web application, allows users to create and share documents containing live code, equations, visualizations, and other text, which help expand understanding of data and its potential applications. The following are some ways Python is applied to OOI data and examples of Jupyter Notebooks using OOI data
