Abstract
Daily, the Hydrographic Institute (IH) receives the results of different meteorological models, through an agreement with other national and international laboratories, and runs operationally different models of maritime agitation, which cover the Global, Regional, Coastal and Port scales.
This information is made available on a global scale with a resolution of 0.5 degrees (about 55 km) and results from the meteorological model GFS (NOAA) and the WW3 maritime agitation model (operated daily at IH).
In regional areas of national interest, other meteorological models are used, such as ECMWF, with a resolution of 0.125 degrees (about 13.5 km) and ALADIN (IPMA), with a resolution of 6 minutes (about 10 km). ).
In coastal areas, sea agitation models are used that are more suitable for shallow waters; the SWAN spectral model, with spatial resolution that can vary between 6 seconds (about 180 m) and 2 seconds (about 60 m), and the SMARTWAVE dominant wave model developed at the IH used in the “Ports and Approaches” and “ Beaches ”, with a resolution of 0.5 seconds (about 15 m).
The meteorological information comes from the ECMWF, ALADIN and AROME models, provided by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere, within the scope of the collaboration of this Institute with the IH.
