Abstract
Alien species are organisms introduced by man in places outside their natural range, either intentionally or accidentally. Some exotic species establish and disperse, forming populations in the new environment, where they can become invasive species and create ecological imbalances, causing the displacement or local extinction of native species, altering the genetic structure of natural populations, monopolizing food resources, and introducing new pathogens and parasites.
Invasive species often have biological characteristics that allow them to outperform native species, which is why they can sometimes cause changes in the composition and structure of biotic communities and alter the natural processes of ecosystems in a region. Some of the most common traits of invasive marine species are rapid growth, a short life cycle, they are prolific, broad tolerance of environmental conditions, varied reproduction strategies, great dispersal capacity, and a generalist diet.
