Abstract ODIN 2 – short for Oceanographic Database Search with Interactive Navigation – is a tool that has been specially developed for working with the IOW’s measurement database – IOWDB: It supports the focused and fast search in over 70 million database entries. The search – in English or in German – is supported by any current web browser and can be narrowed down to specific projects, stations, parameters, time periods, depths and/or areas. ODIN 2 offers the possibility to choose between different output formats for the results, including the visualization of the data. The individually tailored searches can be provided with a permanent link so that the data they contain are citable in scientific publications and their origin can be traced at any time. While external users without registration only have access to time series and depth profiles from the IOW monitoring programme, registration opens up almost the entire data pool of the database. Registration is free of charge. The IOWDB was developed especially for the requirements of the IOW, but since March 2018 it is also accessible to external users. It contains both, historical and current data of the IOW (to a limited extent also external data), which are made available in a user-friendly way via the search tool ODIN 2. The core of the database consists of data collected during research and monitoring cruises carried out by the oceanographers, who have been based in Warnemünde since the early 1950s. Routinely recorded are the physical parameters temperature, salinity, oxygen and data on marine currents as well as various chemical parameters concerning the nutrient situation and the pollutant load of the Baltic Sea. The measuring programme also includes surveys on zooplankton and phytoplankton. Since 2007, hydrographical, meteorological and data on marine currents from the MARNET database also have been integrated into the IOWDB. The hourly averages of temperature, salinity and ADCP flow measurements as well as weather data such as air temperature, wind direction and wind speed recorded by the automatic MARNET stations are transferred and updated daily. Furthermore, Baltic Sea monitoring data from other countries, which have been made available to the IOW by various external partners, are being fed into the IOWDB. The IOW has data sets that are particularly valuable. These include long-term data series with the oldest documented records at various gauging stations around the Baltic Sea dating back to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Some of these time series have been continued consistently for more than 100 years. With four decades, the long-term data of the research cruises of the Institute of Oceanography (IfM) from 1951 to 1991 also belong to these "data treasures", especially because they are being continued by the monitoring cruises of the IOW. The treatment and analysis of measurement data have changed over time, varying in method and quality. For this reason, the available historical data material was transferred to modern data carriers, checked and partly revised – in individual cases even checked separately by experts – before it was transferred to the IOWDB.
