Abstract
The Ichthyological Collection (CIICMYL) of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology (ICML), has as a priority objective the custody and conservation of brackish and freshwater marine fish species, since it constitutes a wealth of information on the ichthyofauna of Mexico and is part university heritage, in addition to establishing itself as a work tool for research, teaching and dissemination of the country's biodiversity.
This collection of fish deposited in the Estuarine Ichthyology and Ecology Laboratory of the ICMyL., is the result of a collection process that began in the mid-nineteenth century, and which gradually increased thanks to the collection and contributions of researchers through research projects. In the sixties, the importance of the collection increased with intense collections and records of marine, brackish and continental water species. The study, documentation and information has obeyed, preferably,
At the beginning of the nineties, a new process of ordering, removal, purification of the material and authorization of the area began in order to reorder and correctly catalog the specimens according to international regulations, we also proceeded to update the systematic and nomenclature of the species.
Species from the marine biogeographic regions that affect the country are included, such as Californian, Cortes Province, Tropical Eastern Pacific (POT) and Panamica, as well as the Carolineana (North American Atlantic Temperate Region) and Caribbean (Atlantic Tropical Region) provinces. Western). In addition, coastal species that inhabit hard bottoms, coral and rocky reefs, as well as soft sand and mud bottoms, and pelagic, mesopelagic and some bathypelagic species are conserved. Freshwater species are also included. The ICMyL Ichthyological Collection has contributed and served as an information base for countless research papers, technical reports, and Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate theses, not only from the Institute itself but from other UNAM dependencies, as well as other Institutions such as the UAM, the National Polytechnic Institute and various provincial universities such as the Faculty of Marine Sciences of the UAS, Fisheries Engineering from La UAN, Universidad del Mar, Oax. Universidad Veracruzana and Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, among others.
The information contained in the CI can serve as a complement to the information that exists in the international FishBase database, with which it is intended to make a connection in the future.
