Each country in the Pacific basin has a National Tsunami Warning Center, which coordinates the issuance of alerts with the international system. In Peru, the National Tsunami Warning System is located at the Hydrography and Navigation Directorate of the Navy located in Chucuito - Callao.
The Tsunami Warning message comes from the International Center located in Honolulu, Hawaii, it is received through the Jorge Chávez International Airport (CORPAC) via the AFTN System (Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunications Network). The DHN, upon receiving this alert, establishes constant communication with the International System to assess the possible risk of the Tsunami occurring on our coast. If there is a risk of a Tsunami, the alert is relayed to INDECI, to be disseminated to the population and activate evacuation plans. DHN maintains a point-to-point telephone communication system (Integrated Optical Fiber Systems Digital Network System - ISDN) with INDECI, IGP, CORPAC and ENAPU, thus ensuring the flow of information during an emergency.
To adequately assess the risk of a tsunami produced by an earthquake of local origin, the IGP, through its national seismic network, informs the National Tsunami Warning System about the location of the epicenter and intensity of the earthquakes that have occurred; in the event of the risk of a Tsunami, the DHN is connected through the Naval Communications System with all the Port Captains of the coast, in order to adequately disseminate alerts to the entire coast of Peru.
