Abstract
The data quality monitoring systems (DQMS) for NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), ESA's Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and NASA's Aquarius satellites Level-2 products has been developed by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Satellite Oceanography team. The DQMS calculates quality assurance (QA) descriptive statistics (including observation number, minimum, maximum, mean, and standard deviation) for selected parameters as new data files are received. Statistics are calculated for each orbit of the SMOS and Aquarius satellites. The DQMS also generates 1.0 degree gridded level-3 SSS data based on box averages with land/ice mask and quality flag filters at monthly and 3-day temporal resolution for SMOS and monthly and 7-day for Aquarius data, including the Combined Active-Passive (CAP) algorithm data. The NCEI-binned level-3 data are saved in netCDF files compliant with the Climate and Forecast (CF) metadata conventions.
