Abstract
The Hydrographic Institute's wave forecast system also supports the safety of the navigation of the traditional "arte- xávega" fishing boats. These boats depart directly from the beach and to get to the fishing areas they have to cross the surf zone, which is a dangerous operation.
This product anticipates in 5 days the meteo-oceanographic conditions. The height of the waves and the depth in the surf zone are calculated and presented together with the predictions of the tide, wind and wave conditions near the coast (height, direction and peak period).
The forecasts cover the main beaches of the “Silver Coast”, where the traditional “arte – xávega” fishing boats still exist.
The meteorological information is obtained from the ECMWF, ALADIN and AROME models, provided by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere, as part of collaboration with HI.
