An Atlas of Southern Ocean Planktonic Ostracods (ODIS id: 1726)
Planktonic ostracods are a neglected component of mesoplanktonic communities, despite being almost ubiquitous throughout the World's oceans. Currently the number of planktonic ostracods described from oceanic waters is 203. In addition there are 34 species of the family Thaumatocyprididae, which are predominantly either benthic or cavernicolous. We present a listing of the currently recognized species . In inshore waters, particularly in the vicinity of coral reefs, there is a great diversity of myodocopid ostracods that can be sampled in the water column especially at night. Most of these myodocopid species are not holoplanktonic, entering the water column at certain stages of their life histories. This site only covers the holoplanktonic species and does not deal with any of the neritic species.
In oceanic waters the vast majority of planktonic ostracods are halocyprids. They are often very abundant, and rank second to copepods in numerical abundance particularly in subthermocline waters. They may occur almost everywhere from the surface to abyssal depths. However, they are seldom encountered in the upper 100-200m of the water column at high latitudes (>50), for example they are infrequently sampled by the Continuous Plankton Recorder, which is towed at 8-10m (Williams, 1975). However, their relatively small size (0.5->3mm) means their contribution to the overall planktonic biomass is usually small (<5%). Most species appear to be detritivores, seemingly adapted to exploit marine snow and other sinking particulates. The group frequently goes unreported, because there is a perception that they are difficult to identify, and so they are overlooked. This difficulty is more the result of a lack of good manuals of identification, rather than any greater intrinsic difficulty of identifying them compared with most other components of the plankton. As well as the halocyprids, there are eight very striking species of carnivorous deepwater myodocopids (i.e. Gigantocypris and Macrocypridina ) that are planktonic, but only two have been recorded from the Southern Ocean.
In preparing this atlas, we have compiled a complete inventory of published records for all known species that can be geo-positioned with reasonable accuracy. These data have been supplemented with a considerable body of unpublished data derived from material collected by Discovery Investigations mostly in the 1930's (identified by MVA). Our aim is ultimately to generate a global atlas for all the species. Here as an initial step we have focused on the species that have been recorded from the Southern Ocean . The criterion whereby we have chosen to include species is a single reliable record from south of 52S. This reduces the number of species that are predominantly associated with low latitudes, but are advected into higher latitudes via mesoscale eddies. Other authors have used lower latitudes to delimit Southern Ocean species, for example Razouls et al. (2000) in their study of the biogeography of Antarctic copepods used 45S as the northern limit of the Southern Ocean. Our compilation for these 47 species

Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts - ProQuest (ODIS id: 1047)
Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts - ProQuest
Overwhelmingly cited by the majority of aquatic and marine science librarians as their primary database, the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) database is the premier reference in the field of fisheries, aquatic and marine sciences. Input to the ASFA database is provided by a growing international network of information centers monitoring over 3,000 serial publications, in addition to books, reports, conference proceedings, translations and grey literature covering the science, technology and management of marine, brackishwater, and freshwater environments.
Although primarily English language, publications in over 40 other languages are translated, indexed and included in the database. Published since 1971, the ASFA database at present contains more than 2,500,000 records.
The ASFA database is produced under the auspices of the ASFA Partnership, a network that includes 4 United Nations sponsoring agencies and more than 50 international and national partners as well as further 45 collaborating institutions and the ASFA Publisher. Each ASFA Partner is tasked with abstracting and indexing the aquatic and marine science literature published in their region. The ASFA Partners are represented on the ASFA Advisory Board.
The ASFA database has been published and distributed worldwide under a cooperative agreement between the ASFA Publisher (ProQuest) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. FAO provides the Secretariat for the ASFA Partnership.
The Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) Bibliographic Database is the principal information product produced through the cooperative efforts of the international network of ASFA Partners and a commercial ASFA Publisher. The database contains more than 2,500,000 bibliographic references to the world's aquatic science literature accessioned since 1971.
Access to the ASFA Bibliographic Database, by the general public, is available through subscription from the commercial ASFA Publisher ProQuest or from one of the ProQuest licensed providers (contact ProQuest for a list)
By agreement, access to the ASFA Bibliographic Database by participating ASFA Partner institutes/organizations is free. Free access to the database is considered as an entitlement (or recompense) for the ASFA Partner's efforts and expense in preparing and submitting references for inclusion in the ASFA database.
There is also an FAO/ASFA project initiative underway to provide free access to the ASFA Bibliographic Database to selected institutes in Low Income Food Deficit Countries (LIFDC).

Climate and Forecast Metadata Conventions
The conventions for CF (Climate and Forecast) metadata are designed to promote the processing and sharing of files created with the NetCDF API. The CF conventions are increasingly gaining acceptance and have been adopted by a number of projects and groups as a primary standard. The conventions define metadata that provides a definitive description of what the data in each variable represents and the spatial and temporal properties of the data. This enables users of data from different sources to decide which quantities are comparable and facilitates building applications with powerful extraction, regrinding, and display capabilities.

The industrial revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the upsurge in international commerce which followed resulted in the adoption of a number of international treaties related to shipping, including safety. The subjects covered included tonnage measurement, the prevention of collisions, signalling and others.
By the end of the nineteenth century suggestions had even been made for the creation of a permanent international maritime body to deal with these and future measures. The plan was not put into effect, but international co-operation continued in the twentieth century, with the adoption of still more internationally-developed treaties.
By the time IMO came into existence in 1958, several important international conventions had already been developed, including the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea of 1948, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of the Sea by Oil of 1954 and treaties dealing with load lines and the prevention of collisions at sea.
IMO was made responsible for ensuring that the majority of these conventions were kept up to date. It was also given the task of developing new conventions as and when the need arose.
The creation of IMO coincided with a period of tremendous change in world shipping and the Organization was kept busy from the start developing new conventions and ensuring that existing instruments kept pace with changes in shipping technology. It is now responsible for more than 50 international conventions and agreements and has adopted numerous protocols and amendments.

Coordinating Working Party Handbook of Fishery Statistics - FAO
Considering capture fisheries and aquaculture from a global or a regional perspective requires national fisheries statistical programmes to be coherent and consistent, and demands a common set of regional or interregional statistical standards which apply internationally recognized definitions, classifications and codes. The CWP Handbook of Fisheries Statistics was created to serve as the basis for this integration.
The CWP Handbook covers the concepts, definitions, classifications and data exchange protocols – and not least the codes as applied to capture fisheries and aquaculture statistics globally. Many of these concepts and definitions are applied in a wider context, but the user is advised to check the validity of such applications. The Handbook indicates the principles applied by the international agencies and no attempt has been made to include details of national systems, many of which, having been developed for specific national purposes, may differ from those employed internationally.
The intended users of this Handbook are the CWP Member Agencies, national fishery and aquaculture statistics offices, national administrations and other fishery and aquaculture agencies. The Handbook is also intended to assist in the development of national standards as logical extensions of the international standards. Authorities considering introducing or revising national statistical systems are requested to ensure that the system developed incorporates a high degree of compatibility with the international standards described here.

Cruise Summary Report Inventory - Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans
This database gives details of completed cruises and provides a first level inventory of oceanographic measurements made and samples taken. In 1990, the Cruise Summary Report has succeeded the ROSCOP (Report of Observations/ Samples Collected by Oceanographic Programmes) that was conceived by IOC/IODE in the late 1960s in order to provide an inventory for tracking oceanographic data collected on Research Vessels. The CSR activity gained new momentum in Europe in the framework of the development of the SeaDataNet infrastructure, under the lead of the Bundesamt für Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographie (BSH) from Germany. The combined ICES and SeaDataNet CSR database now comprises details of over 50.000 oceanographic research cruises primarily from Europe and North America, some information extending back over the last 50 years.
Most marine disciplines are represented in the CSR, including physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, fisheries, marine geology/geophysics, marine contamination/pollution, and marine meteorology. Traditionally, it is the Chief Scientist's obligation to submit a CSR to his/her National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) not later than two weeks after the cruise.
For the POGO CID system BSH has developed a special version of the CSR database, that gives access to Cruise Summary Reports of all ocean-going vessels worldwide larger than 60 metres. BSH also provides an online Content Management System (CMS) to allow Chief Scientists and NODCs of countries outside Europe to prepare and deliver their Cruise Summary Reports.

Cruise Summary Reports (CSR = former ROSCOPs) are the usual means in SeaDataNet for reporting on cruises or field experiments at sea. Traditionally, it is the Chief Scientist's obligation to submit a CSR to his/her National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) not later than two weeks after the cruise. This provides a first level inventory of measurements and samples collected at sea. Information such as the ship track, objectives of the cruise and principal investigators contacts are also included among other metadata elements tested to be useful in the marine community practice.
Currently, the Cruise Summary Reports directory covers cruises from 1873 till today from more than 2.000 research vessels: a total of nearly 58.000 cruises, in all European waters and global oceans. This also includes historic CSRs from European countries that have been loaded from the ICES database from 1960 onwards.

Data Management and Curation - Institute for Social Research at University of Michigan (ODIS id: 1612)
Data Management and Curation - Institute for Social Research at University of Michigan
ICPSR stores, curates, and provides access to scientific data so others can reuse the data and validate research findings. Curation, from the Latin "to care," is the process that ICPSR uses to add value to data, maximize access, and ensure long-term preservation.
Data curation is akin to work performed by an art or museum curator. Through the curation process, data are organized, described, cleaned, enhanced, and preserved for public use, much like the work done on paintings or rare books to make the works accessible to the public now and in the future. With the modern Web, it's increasingly easy to post and share data. Without curation, however, data can be difficult to find, use, and interpret. Through curation, ICPSR provides meaningful and enduring access to data.

The Information and Valorization of Research Results Unit (UNIVAL) created in 1987 is a transversal structure of ISRA which supports a variety of activities.
In the field of scientific and technical information management:
As part of the development of research activities, the scientific teams generate a good production of documents to be managed and preserved according to the standards in force and under very appropriate conditions to guarantee them a certain durability and easy and permanent access. These same teams feel the need to be supported by the provision of updated and permanent documentation in their daily activities. Consequently, UNIVAL must develop a strategy capable of guaranteeing good conservation and dissemination of scientific and technical information (IST).
In the field of publishing:
The UNIVAL must support researchers in their scientific production in terms of publications, by providing support in the editing of scientific and institutional documents. In addition, support development and / or identification activities must be carried out, favoring niches through which staff in general or researchers in particular can publish.
In the field of communication/promotion:
The activities of the Unit must also be oriented towards the definition of a global communication plan, the execution of which should make it possible to:
Promote the Institute's research results by their appropriation by end users but also by recognition of their impact on agricultural development by decision-makers, partners and the general public in general.
Inform all staff about the life of the Institute so as to better promote a corporate culture.

The FAO Document Repository (FDR) is an online digital library that collects and disseminates current FAO materials and preserves the Organization’s information for the future. The FDR allows users to easily access FAO’s wealth of materials, including books, journals, articles, newsletters, posters and project reports that cover every area of FAO’s work. Dating back to 1945, the collection has over 1.3 million digital objects in approximately 80 languages. FAO recently implemented a new search for the FDR that makes finding documentation faster and more efficient. This new functionality uses the Google Search Appliance and provides numerous different fields for specified searches. You can find information based on one, or a combination of, fields including language, author, date, ISBN, or multilingual agricultural vocabulary terms (Agrovoc terms). You can also search for the FDR by country. If you are looking for any type of information related to one country, you simply select the country name listed within that advanced search field and it finds all documents tagged accordingly. Using these tags, the FDR also feeds FAO webpages with relevant materials so that anyone looking for information can find the same document either directly from the FDR or from a related page within fao.org. As one example, FAO Country Profile pages are regularly updated with new publications and documentation relevant to each country. Clicking on a document title opens the card page, which gives you a short summary about the item and lists the other available language versions. You can even review and rate the document from this page to let us and others know what you think.

The Union List of Marine and Aquatic Serials is a volunteer project to facilitate interlibrary loan programs among marine science libraries by providing a list of which libraries own specific journals.
The list of serials contained here was derived from the list of source journals for Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts as a starting point. Libraries may also submit additional serial titles to be added to the database, along with their holdings data. In this fashion, it is hoped that a more comprehensive listing of marine and aquatic sciences serials will develop, along with information on owning libraries and their lending practices.

Dspace repository - Smithsonian Institution
The Smithsonian Institution is the largest museum complex in the world. Its 19 museums, 9 research centers and the National Zoo contain over 130 million artifacts, specimens and/or works of art. Results of research at the Institution are published by hundreds of scientists, historians and other scholars every year. Recently the Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) has begun collecting the digital publications of Institution researchers to ensure both the long-term care and public availability of these objects via the Smithsonian Digital Repository.
Currently the Repository contains published reprints from scientific, peer-reviewed journals, including the Institution's Smithsonian Contributions series. A limited amount of additional (ephemeral) material produced by the Institution is also archived in the system.
The open source software, DSpace was chosen because of it's widespread adoption and user community. Among the specific requirements for the system were the use of persistent URLs and the ability to batch-ingest multiple items at once. Because of security concerns the system was designed so that content ingest is done on a server which is maintained inside the Institution's firewall. A second, mirrored server is available for public search and data harvest. It is updated nightly via file synchronization and database dump/restore routines from the secure (internal-only) server. The public- facing server does not permit user login, edit or upload.
Development of the Repository was somewhat challenging at first due to a shortage of IT staff and support. Because the program was undertaken by the SI Libraries, the lack of technical knowledge of library staff required that a contractor install the initial hardware and software. A librarian then took computer-based training course(s) in UNIX, SQL and XML, among other modules in order to develop the skills necessary to maintain and manage the data. Many universities which begin digital repositories have a ready supply of student help who may be studying or have had training in server management, network architecture and the Unix/Linux environment. The Smithsonian does not have a similar pool of talent to draw from.
For both the internal and public servers, the Smithsonian's Office of the Chief Information Officer maintains the operating system, updates and backups. All other applications (database, repository, utilities, etc.) are installed, maintained and updated by library staff. Due to this shortage of technical expertise devoted to the project, it has not been possible for the Smithsonian Digital Repository to migrate to latest version of DSpace or to employ many plug-ins such as statistics enhancements, which might make the service more appealing.

FAOLEX Database - FAO
FAOLEX is a comprehensive and up-to-date legislative and policy database, one of the world's largest online repositories of national laws, regulations and policies on food, agriculture and natural resources management. Users of FAOLEX have direct access to the abstracts and indexing information about each text, as well as to the full text of the legislation and policies contained in the database.
FAOLEX is a database of national legislation, policies and bilateral agreements on food, agriculture and natural resources management. It is constantly being updated, with an average of 8,000 new entries per year. It currently contains legal and policy documents drawn from more than 200 countries, territories and regional economic integration organizations and originating in over 40 languages.
Administered by the Development Law Service (LEGN) of the FAO Legal Office, FAOLEX complements FAO’s core function of advising its Members on legal and institutional means to promote and regulate national development and international cooperation in the food and agriculture sector.
FAO has been committed to the collection and dissemination of legal, governance and policy information for more than 70 years. Its core mandate has always included the collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture. While FAO was established in 1945, it draws on the legacy of the International Institute of Agriculture (IIA), which was founded in 1905 to collect and publish statistical information on farming and agricultural products. In 1948, the functions and assets of the IIA were transferred to FAO. From 1952 to 1995, the FAO Legal Office published “Food and Agricultural Legislation”, an annual compilation of significant, innovative and illustrative legislation. In 1995, the Office overhauled this information service by replacing it with FAOLEX, becoming a forerunner in the world of online legal databases.
In FAOLEX, the key elements of each legal or policy document are summarized in English, French or Spanish, and indexed to facilitate search and retrieval. While FAOLEX makes every effort to serve as a high quality, reliable source of information, no guarantee is given that the information provided in FAOLEX is correct, complete, and up-to-date. The summary records are provided for information purposes only. Many translations contained in FAOLEX are unofficial and are intended solely to provide a broad understanding of policies, laws and regulations. Neither the summary records nor the unofficial translations are intended to replace consultation of the authentic texts. Links to other non-FAO web sites are provided for the user's convenience. The terms and conditions applicable to the use of the FAO website apply to use of the FAOLEX database.
